The Omega 8500 Caliber Series is an improved co-axial escapement developed by Omega to fully optimize its potential. The Co-Axial escapement organ is 13% larger and more effective in the larger space availed to it. It gets its power from the double master barrels. The barrels are DLC (Diamond-like carbon) coated inside to decrease attrition and have been tested to imitate over 10 years of use with little wear effect to the DLC. The sixty manual revolutions of the crown completely wrap the two main springs. The "hand-wound" barrel without slip clutch is wound first, then the "automatic" barrel with slip clutch. The manually wound bucket has a slightly greater torque, first deployed until the auto bucket quickly jumps in to power the escapement in common. The bi-directional winding rotor has been redesigned to make it so efficient that it winds with the slightest wrist motion and is almost inaudible. The movement is ornamented with a pretty "Cotes de Geneve en Arabesque".
Other improvements include: 14-leaf meshing pinion pairs 8-leaf at 2500, Nivarox Anachon balancing springs, zirconia rotor pivot jewels, improved Nivachoc shock absorbers and a large number of lateral balance bridges. Since 2011, 8500/8501 equipped with a more stable silicon Si14 hairspring. The old version will be gradually upgraded to Si14 gossamer.
